Since before she could remember, Darby DeMoss’ life has revolved around the excitement and tradition of rodeo. Raised in an environment where the thrill of the arena was woven into daily life, she possesses an incredible amount of talent through her deep, firsthand experience. At just 19 years old, DeMoss is already making her mark in the arena, competing as a dedicated member of the Northeast Texas Community College rodeo team in breakaway roping, team roping and barrel racing. Her skill and determination shine, even while navigating college life, reflecting years of practice and the support of a family deeply invested in rodeo culture.
The DeMoss family’s love for rodeo runs deep, and her own devotion to the sport has been strongly shaped by her family’s legacy at NTCC. Her parents, Margie and Cody DeMoss first joined the NTCC rodeo team together after graduating from high school. Cody was a versatile cowboy, participating in bareback riding, tie-down roping, calf roping, steer wrestling and even taking on the challenge of bull riding from time to time. Margie DeMoss was equally dedicated and competed in goat tying and barrel racing.
“It has been such a blessing to be able to have her carry on a rich family tradition here at NTCC. She is such an outstanding individual and a fierce competitor, just like her father who qualified not only for the college national finals but made 14 trips to the NFR. Anybody that is a fan of rodeo has the utmost respect.”

DeMoss is also proud of her parent’s accomplishments in the sport and the opportunity to follow in their footsteps.
“For me to carry on their legacy means a lot because I know the impact that they had while they were there, and considering the path my dad took, I want to follow in his footsteps.” DeMoss’ academic journey is also just as forceful as her rodeo career. While she is keeping her options open for the future, her heart is set on earning a certificate in ranch management, a choice that speaks to her desire to blend practical skills with her passion for the ranching lifestyle.

The family’s shared history at NTCC has long been admired by others as well, and rumors even suggest that somewhere among the trees on campus, Cody and Margie DeMoss’ initials are carved—a romantic reminder of their youthful adventures. DeMoss herself has embarked on playful quests to find this mythical tree, but its location remains an enchanting mystery that keeps the legend alive. The DeMoss legacy at NTCC extends beyond Darby’s parents. Her uncle and two cousins also attended the college, further enriching the family’s connection to the institution and its rodeo program. Despite having the opportunity to attend other notable two-year colleges, such as Texas A&M, Panola, Sam Houston and several others, DeMoss chose to follow her family by enrolling at NTCC.
Both Margie and Cody DeMoss continue to be active in the rodeo community, supporting their daughter as she pursues her own accomplishments in the sport. Reflecting on her daughter’s journey, Margie DeMoss, said, “Our family has deep roots at NTCC, and we think that it is very special to see Darby carry on the legacy of attending there.”
DeMoss’ passion for rodeo is clear as she eagerly looks forward to every practice and competition. As she prepares to finish her degree, DeMoss is excited about the possibility of continuing her education at another institution, confident that her foundation at NTCC will serve her well in her future endeavors.
Through her dedication, warmth and love for rodeo, Darby DeMoss inspires others to pursue their dreams with courage and heart.
“Carrying on my parents’ legacy at NTCC means more to me than continuing a tradition, it means carrying forward their love for rodeo and the values it taught our family.”
